Eine Studie zur ersten Briefmarkenausgabe Brasiliens

Sammler von Brasiliens bekannter Erstausgabe – den 1843 erschienenen sog. Ochsenaugen – werden sich erinnern. 1999 veröffentlichte der bekannte Prüfer BPP und Experte der klassischen Ausgaben dieses Landes, Bernd Juchert, zum ersten Mal eine damals 150 Seiten umfassende Studie, in der die zu jener Zeit bekannten Briefe mit Ochsenaugen gelistet, beschrieben und abgebildet waren. Damals nur schwarzweiß, häufig auch mit sehr unzureichenden Illustrationen, weil man Besseres noch nicht kannte.
Zwischen dieser ersten damaligen und der nun von Wolfgang Maassen herausgegebenen zweiten Auflage liegen Welten. Diese präsentiert in einer sehr hochwertig und aufwändig gestalteten Edition auf nunmehr 360 Seiten – also mit weit mehr als doppeltem Umfang – nahezu 50 Prozent mehr seitdem neu entdeckte echte Briefe, aber auch 38 (statt damals zehn) verfälschte resp. falsche Briefe, außerdem 18 (damals elf) Belege, zu denen die Faktenprüfung noch nicht abgeschlossen ist, weshalb diese vorerst als „fragwürdig“ eingestuft werden. Fragwürdig bedeutet nicht, darauf machen Autor und Herausgeber aufmerksam, dass diese Briefe notwendigerweise falsch sind; sie können ebenso echt sein, nur sind noch nicht alle vorhandenen Fragen geklärt bzw. diese Briefe lagen dem Autor Juchert noch nicht im Original vor.
Was die Neuauflage besonders auszeichnet, sind drei Merkmale: Die nahezu 300 Abbildungen sind überwiegend erstmals in Farbe. Mehr als hundert Illustrationen sind neu enthalten, teils in Originalgröße auch des Briefinhaltes. Zum zweiten wurden Versteigerungsnachweise bis hin zu Zuschlagsergebnissen bei Auktionen fast jedem Beleg zugeordnet. All dies wird in einem ansprechenden farbigen Layout dreisprachig wiedergegeben, wobei die portugiesische Übersetzung von Dr. Bernhard Jankowsky (ArGe Brasilien im BDPh) und die englische vom Herausgeber Wolfgang Maassen bereitgestellt wurden. Das Lektorat nahmen Prof. Júlio Sílvio de Souza Bueno aus São Paulo und Philip Robinson FRPSL aus England vor, so dass das umfangreiche Werk – tatkräftig mit Abbildungsvorlagen von dem Auktionshaus Corinphila aus Zürich, aber auch von Sammlern in aller Welt unterstützt – tatsächlich eine weltweite Ko-Produktion der besonderen Art ist.
Erstmals wurden alle Briefe auch mit Nummern (entsprechend der Abbildungen) versehen, so dass diese seltenen Belege – bis heute sind nur 217 echte bekannt – künftig leicht zu zitieren und nachzuweisen sind. Zwei Jahre Arbeit investierten Autor wie Herausgeber in dieses Werk, dessen Entstehung auf eine Anregung von Karl Louis FRPSL bei der BRASILIANA 2013 zurückgeht.

A Study of the First Isssue of Brazil

Collectors of Brazil's famous first issue - the so-called “Bull’s Eyes” of 1843 - will remember. In 1999 the well-known expert on the classic issues of this country, Bernd Juchert, published the first comprehensive, 150-page study, in which the “Bull’s Eye” covers that were known at that time were listed, described and illustrated. At that time the illustrations were in in black and white and often very inadequate, because at the time nobody could do better.
The first edition and the second edition, now published by Wolfgang Maassen, are worlds apart. The new, high-quality and lavishly presented book now has 360 pages, that is, more than twice the content of the first edition - and it shows almost 50 per cent more covers which have come to light in the meantime. There are also 38 faked or forged covers (instead of ten) and 18 (instead of 11) covers on which no expert opinion has yet been given, and so must be regarded as “questionable”. The author and publisher make it clear that ‘questionable’ does not necessarily mean that these covers are faked; they might be perfectly genuine, but all the relevant questions are not yet answered and/or the author, Juchert, has not yet seen these covers in the original.
Three characteristics in particular distinguish the new edition. The almost 300 illustrations are, for the most part, shown in colour for the first time. More than one hundred illustrations are new, some of them shown at the original size, also the contents of the letters. Secondly, auction records including prices realised are given for almost every cover. All this is given in an attractive, full-colour format, and trilingually, with the Portuguese translation prepared by Dr Bernhard Jankowsky (ArGe Brazil in the BDPh) and the English by the publisher Wolfgang Maassen. Prof. Júlio Sílvio de Souza Bueno of São Paulo and Philip Robinson FRPSL of England did the final proof-reading so that this extensive work, with illustrative material from the auction Corinphila auction house in Zurich, but supported also by collectors all over the world, is actually a worldwide co-production of a special kind.
For the first time all the covers are given numbers (as shown in the illustrations) so that these rare items - to date only 217 genuine covers are known - will in future be easily referred to and quoted. The author and publisher have spent two years on this work, whose realisation can be traced back to a suggestion by Karl Louis FRPSL at BRASILIANA 2013.

A primeira edição deste livro foi publicada em 1999, há 15 anos atrás, com 150 páginas de catalogação, e com ilustra-ções em preto e branco, contendo:
- 151 cartas então conhecidas e consideradas autênticas,
- 10 falsificações e 11 cartas contestáveis franquiadas com Olhos-de-Boi.
Esta nova edição aumentada e ampliada que se oferece agora, em 360 páginas, geralmente com ilustrações em côres, e em três idiomas (alemão, inglês e português), contem:
- 217 cartas consideradas autênticas, ou seja, 45 % a mais do que a edição anterior (!),
- pela primeira vez quatro documentos jurídicos (“Cartas Receptórias”) com franquia de Olhos-de-Boi, pratica-mente desconhecidos até agora,
- 18 cartas chamadas duvidosas,
- 38 cartas falsificadas franquiadas com Olhos-de-Boi e
- 2 cartas inteiramente falsas.
Comparada com a primeira edição de 1999 a quantidade de ilustrações aumentou em mais de 100 em um total de aproximadamente 290, das quais cerca de 200 pela primeira vez em côres. As cartas receberam números que no futuro serão considerados números de referência. Além disso, encontram-se inúmeras referências a leilões e também preços realizados.
